Traineeships and Apprenticeships

A traineeship or an apprenticeship is a great way to start your career. It allows you to work in a paid job and study at the same time. You gain valuable work experience in the industry and a nationally recognised qualification.

Traineeships

Traineeships are full-time or part-time employment based training agreements. Trainees gain hands-on skills and experience in the workplace whilst completing a nationally recognised qualification. Full-time traineeships are completed over 12 months. Part-time traineeships are completed over an 18 month period with students spending a minimum of 20 hours per week in the workplace.

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are completed over a term of three or four years on a full-time basis. Employment is combined with training off-the-job at C.Y. O’Connor Institute. On completion of an apprenticeship, students are recognised as fully qualified tradespeople.

How do you get a Traineeship or an Apprenticeship?

The first step is to find yourself an employer. Then you can apply to become an apprentice or trainee with the Apprenticentre. (We can help you with this.) If you utilise the services of a group training scheme you may still select C.Y. O’Connor Institute as your nominated RTO. Then, you go to work every day to learn skills on the job.

Some days (or possibly for a week at a time) you may be required to attend classes at C.Y. O’Connor Institute and complete studies or assessments set by the Institute.

All trainees and apprentices are issued with a training record book which details all units the student is studying. Your employer and the Institute are required to sign off on your progress in this book. At the end of your traineeship or apprenticeship, you keep this book as a personal record of what you have studied and achieved. For more information on apprenticeships, go to www.trainingwa.wa.gov.au/apprenticentre/

School-based Traineeships

School-based Traineeships are for fulltime secondary school students who are preparing themselves for a career by developing skills in an industry. They are paid for the work that they do. Successful completion of a school-based traineeship means students graduate from secondary school and gain an industry recognised qualification.

Pre-Apprenticeships

C.Y. O’Connor Institute, along with the following industry partners are offering pre-apprenticeship opportunities in 2011:

  • Directions
  • WA College of Agriculture-Narrogin
  • WA Farm Machinery Dealers Association
  • WA Regional Manufacturers Inc

These programs will run for a full semester (20 weeks) and are designed to prepare young people for a career in industry, learning and practicing their skills in real work environments. Traditional tradespersons have the highest level of employment of all workers and pre apprenticeships are a great starting point, helping to give a ‘taste’ of what to expect.
